The warm and refined flavor of DISARONNO dates back to one of the most romantic and creative periods in Italian history: the Renaissance. In 1525, the artist Bernardino Luini, a brilliant disciple of Leonardo da Vinci, was commissioned to paint a fresco of the Madonna dei Miracoli in Saronno (where the fresco is still exhibited today). To portray the Madonna, he chose a beautiful local innkeeper as his muse. As a token of her gratitude, the innkeeper prepared a special gift for the artist, namely a flask filled with an amber, fragrant and delicate liqueur. Thus was born the legend of DISARONNO: from a simple gesture of courtesy and the hand-made combination of secret ingredients.
In the 1600s, many families distilled their own liqueurs and digestives. La Reina was one of those families and Giovanni Reina rediscovered the ancient recipe of the innkeeper. The Reina family has jealously guarded the secret formula, passing it down from generation to generation. In the early twentieth century, Domenico Reina decided to open a shop and a laboratory near the terminus of the steam tram coming from Milan, which took the name of "Domenico Reina Coloniali", located in the heart of Saronno. It was here that the Original Disaronno was produced and marketed.
The first bottle had a classical inspiration and dates back to when Domenico Reina made the liqueur in his small workshop. With the evolution of Disaronno, the bottle gradually developed a more exclusive appearance. With the addition of an elegant and original label, the bottle abandoned the "cylinder" in favor of a square shape, which gave it a unique and unmistakable identity.
In 1947, I.L.L.V.A.: Industria, Lombarda, Liquori, Vini & Affini was founded on the wave of this craft activity. Today the headquarters is located in the Saronno factory and is 100% owned by the Reina family. DISARONNO is still produced here today, together with many other successful Italian brands.
The first major export boom occurred in the 1960s, when the liqueur was introduced and spread to many countries, and international successes followed. The European example was soon followed by the United States, which developed a strong taste for Italian liqueur.
In the seventies, a master glassmaker from Murano (Venice) created a work of art. The unique and handcrafted "square bottle" was made of soft and shiny glass and gave life to the now familiar design, recognized all over the world. The brand image of the bottle is unmistakable and has only been retouched occasionally, without ever losing its essential characteristics.
